Reconfirmation of the Adonis Complex Assessment Tool: Analysis of Validity and Reliability of the Chinese Version
Abstract:The Adonis Complex Questionnaire (ACQ) is an assessment tool that was developed more than 20 years ago in a Western context. In view of different perceptions of muscularity that men in Eastern countries may hold, it is necessary to reexamine the factor structures, validity and reliability of a Chinese version. This three-phase study aims to develop and reconfirm the valid and reliable Chinese version of the ACQ. The participants of the present study were 90, 112, and 224 for the three-phase, respectively. The first phase employed exploratory factor analysis to examine the factor structure of the Chinese ACQ. The second phase utilized confirmatory factor analysis to confirm its convergent validity, discriminant validity, composite reliability (CR), average variance extracted (AVE) and criterion-related validity; while the third phase attempted to test the measurement invariance. Results are as follows: in the first phase, the Chinese version of the ACQ was a three-factors structure with explained 59.73% of the total variance, and Cronbach's α was .83. In the second phase, the Chinese ACQ was found to have acceptable convergent validity, discriminant validity, CR, AVE, and criterion-related validity. The results of the third phase supported full measurement invariance. We conclude that the Chinese version of the ACQ is valid and reliable, and the measurement invariance in the cross-group is stable. It is suitable for evaluating Eastern men's psychological state (such as muscle dysmorphia), related behaviors (such as eating disorders, exercise dependence) and Adonis complex. (Full text)
